Title of work and top text: "The People of Portland"

This was the first project / painting completed in the new studio. The piece is 10 feet tall by six feet wide and is for the 1st annual Lighthouses on Parade event in Portland. The Lighthouse will be on display through the summer of 2003 outside, in front of the Union Oil gas station on Commercial Street, right next to Rufus Deering lumber yard. It will be placed in this location by May 12th, and will be there until September 2003. At that time there will be a live auction with all of the lighthouses from this event. Please visit the above link for more info on the times and dates.

The faces and figures wrap 360 degrees around the structure, which is painted in acrylic only using 3 colors, 2 blues and a red. The story of the faces and people I painted is that of the state of the world at the time I was completing it. The impending war leaving its mark on everyone, and the different reactions of all the people I met and saw during this time. Some of the newest work included in the "Avanti Maestoso (go forward majestically)" exhibition is in this same vein.

I swore that when I moved to Portland I would never paint a lighthouse...
