New Studio·2003

Well, it was a 4 month project, more or less, and it's still in progress, but now I have a working studio with enough light, space and storage to make the paintings I need to make...so far so good, the energy here is perfect.

The work was very intense, but the studio has already given me the incredible freedom to produce several of the largest most powerful canvases I have yet to paint, as well as a 10 foot tall lighthouse (See link).

Enjoy the photos and info, I hope everyone gets a chance to stop by for a visit,
maybe I'll paint your portrait while you're here...
and don't forget about the First Friday Artwalk Open Studio in June!

Above: Before and after, looking from the back of the studio towards the stairs and new loft...I left the original bannisters at the top of the old stairs in place, and built the loft and new rails around them. The loft is used as storage right now, but eventually will be a finished sleeping / reading / meditation space. The pile of clothes is gone...

Above: Before and after, looking from the bedroom out...check the sweet linoleum floors and stylin' wallpaper. Too bad you couldn't be here to smell the delicious cat urine soaked into the old wooden floors when I moved in...The ceiling height was raised from about 6.5 feet (see the photo on the left) to about 16 feet in the center of the studio...and it smells much better now.

After insulating the attic and pulling out all the old barnwood, I had to tear down all the bedroom walls and rip out the entire ceiling. The first floor roof above the laundry room in the back of the house had to be torn off and lowered about 2 feet in order to fit the french doors in. Now the roof is being prepared for a roof deck and a new set of stairs leading down to the garage which will eventually become my frame shop and sculpture studio. I added the 3 laminated beams, installed the new french doors and 8x5 foot double slider window looking out over the bay, and then built the loft and installed the pine on the ceiling. These photos are from the loft area.

The above view is from the French doors looking in and out towards the ocean. All the old electric was stripped out, and all new outlets, switches and fixtures were added, since there were only 3 outlets in the entire old space! The detail work on the loft, stairs, railings, new windows and doors was finished and then I plastered and painted all the walls. Finally I had to install a new floor and patch all the holes from the old walls throughout about 2/3rds of the space, and then I sanded, stained and polyeurathaned the whole upstairs. The work lamps and the mounting structures were installed and then the ceiling fan...And then of course was the wiring and installation of the studio speakers from the downstairs stereo...music is key.

Above is the view from the ocean (East) side of the studio with the large 8x5 foot sliding window which faces the bay to my back...After uncovering the old chimney which had been all boxed in, I had to clean it and patch it, but it really adds alot of feeling to the space. The upstairs portion of the house originally had 4 bedrooms and a bathroom and now has one master bedroom and a full bath, the rest is the studio. The door off to the left of the stairs is the bathroom. That hallway leads to the bedroom. The painting on the easel is the title piece for my new show, "Avanti Maestoso (go forward majestically)", and can be seen for the month of May at the Klaman Bottle Building in Portland...click this link to get all the info on the exhibition!
